Thanksgiving Day

There is one day a year in America when all people stay home with their family and eat a big dinner.This is Thanksgiving Day .The Pilgrims celebrated the first Thanksgiving day in autumn 1621.They sailed to America from Plymouth, England in September,1620.Their voyage took 3 month. They came to America for religious freedom. The name of their ship was the Mayflower. They landed in December, 1620. There were more than 1 hundren people.

There were people living in America before the Pilgrims arrived.These people were the Native American Indians.They hunted, fisher and farmed to survive.The Pilgrims" first winter was very difficult. They had arrived too late to grow any crops. Without fresh food half of the Pilgrims died. The following spring the Indians taught the Pilgrims how to plant, fish, hunt and survive in America, to grow corn, pumpkins and use cranberries.

The crops did well and in the fall of 1621 the Pilgrims had a great harvest. They were thankful and decided to celebrate it with a Thanksgiving feast. They prepared a big dinner of turkey, corn, beans and pumpkins. They invited their Indian friends to share this three day feast. The Indians brought their food to the feast, too.

American still celebrate Thanksgiving day in the fall. It is celebrated on the last Thursday of November. Turkey is still the main dish and pumpkin pie and cranberry pie are the most popular desserts.

American children look forward to spend their Thanksgiving day with their grandparents. Listen to the poem "Over the river" written by L.M. Child in 1860. It is still popular with the children.

Thanksgiving day is associated with certain symbols and foods. Turkey is a part of the traditional Thanksgiving dinner, as well as pumpkin pie and cranberries. The Horn of Plenty is a familiar Thanksgiving symbol. It reminds us that our food comes from the earth. Indian corn is used as a decoration.People usually go to church in the morning or in the afternoon. Try an old Thanksgiving ritual this year. Start your meal with joyful noise of Thanksgiving.

Story-teller: Very soon Snow White and her Prince got married and lived happily for f long, long time.

C1: Do you hear the music? To my mind, one of the rising stars of Wonderland is singing.

King Lear: My dear daughters, I’m very old and tired. I can’t be the King of Britain any more. I want to divide the country into three parts and give one part to each of you. And you’ll be the queens of your parts. But first you must tell me how much you love me. Then I will know which of you must get the better part.

Goneril: Dear father, I love you very much. I love you more than my beauty, more than my life. No child loves his father more than I do.

Regan: If only you knew what you mean for me. You are the dearest man in my life. I can’t imagine myself without you.

King Lear: I’m very glad to hear that. And what would you like to tell me, Cordelia?

Cordelia: I don’t understand why my sisters say they love you more than anything else. They are married. Don’t they love their husbands? You are my father, and of course, I love you. But when I marry I’ll love my husband, too.

King Lear: Oh, it’s not the right thing you’ve told me! I’m disappointed. I don’t want to have such a daughter! You’ll get nothing! Go away!

C1: Our girls are going to recite some of his wonderful sonnets and get acquainted with there Russian translations by Marshak and Pasternak.

Sonnet 66:

Tired with all these, for restful death I cry;

As, to behold desert a beggar born,

And needy nothing trimm’d in jollity,

And purest faith unhappily forsworn,

And gilded honour shamefully misplaced,

And maiden virtue rudely strumpeted,

And right perfection wrongfully disgraced,

And strength by limping sway disabled,

And art made tongue- tied by authority,

And folly doctor- like controlling skill,

And simple truth miscall’d simplicity,

And captive good attending captain ill:

Tired with all these, from these would I be gone,

Save that, to die, I leave my love alone.

The translation of the sonnet by B. Pasternak:

Sonnet 91

Some glory in their birth, some in their skill,

Some in their wealth, some in their bodies’ force;

Some in their garments, though new- fangled ill;

Some in their hawks and hounds, some in their horse;

And every humour hath his adjunct pleasure

Wherein it finds a joy above the rest.

But these particulars are not my measure;

All these I better in one general best.
Thy love is better than high birth to me,
Richer than wealth, prouder than garments’ cost,

Of more delight than hawks or horses be,

And having thee, of all men’s pride I boast;
Wretched in this alone, that thou mayst take

All this away, and me most wretched make.

Sonnet 130:

My mistress’ eyes are nothing like the sun;

Coral is far more red than her lips’ red;

If snow be white, why then her breasts are dun;

If hairs be wires, black wires grow on her head.

I have seen roses damask’d, red and white,

But no such roses see I in her cheeks;

And in some perfumes is there more delight

Than in the breath that from my mistress reeks.

I love to hear her speak, yet well I know

That music hath a far more pleasing sound;

I grant I never saw a goddess go;

My mistress, when she walks, treads on the ground.

And yet, by heaven, I think my love as rare

As any she belied with false compare.

The translation of the sonnet by S. Marshak:

C1: So our trip to Wonderland is coming to an end. We hope that you have liked it. The most important thing that connects all the people of our country is our friendship. So let’s live in friendship and peace!

A Red, Red Rose

O my love’s like a red? Red rose,

That’s newly sprung in June;

O my love’s like the melodic

That’s sweetly play’d in tune.

As fair are you, my beautiful lass,

So deep in love am I;

And I will love you still, my Dear,

Till a’ the seas gang dry. –

Till a’ the seas go dry, my Dear,

And the rocks melt with the sun:

I will love you still, my Dear,

While the sands o’ life shall run.–

And fare you well, my only love!

And take you well, a while!

And I will come again, my love,

Though it were ten thousand mile! –

Juliet

Will thou be gone! It is not near day:

It was with nightingale, and not the lark,

That pierc’d the fearful hollow of thine ear;

Nightly she sings on you pomegranate tree:

Believe me, love, it was the nightingale.

Romeo

It was Me lark, the herald of the morn ,

No nightingale: look, love, what envious streaks.

Do lace the severing clouds in yonder east:

Night’s candles are burnt out, and jocund day

Hands tiptoe on the misty mountain tops:

Juliet

I must be gone and live, or stay and die.

Yon light is not daylight, I know it, I:

It is some meteor that the sun exhales,

To be to thee this night a torch-bearer,

And light thee on thy way to Mantua:

There fore stay yet: thou need’st not to be gone.

Romeo

Let me be ta’ en, let me be put to death;

I am content, so thou will have it so.

I’ll say yon grey is not the morning’s eye.

I is but the pale reflex of Cynthia’s brow;

Nor that is not the lark, whose notes do beat

The vaulty heaven so high about our heads:

I have more cave to stay, than will to go:

Come, death, and welcome! Juliet wills it so.

How is’t, my soul? Let’s talk, it is not dog.

Juliet

It is, it is, me hence, he gone, away!

It is lark that sings so out of tune,

Straining harsh dis cords and ump lessing sharps.

Some say the lark makes sweet division,

This doth not so, for she divideth us:

Some say the lark and loathed toad change eyes;

O! now I would they had chang’d voices too,

Since arm from arm that voice doth us affray,

Hunting thee hence with hunts-up to the day.

O! now be gone; more light and light it grows.

Romeo

More light and light; more dark

and dark our woes.
